Rachid Taha vainqueur du BBC Radio 3 Award catégorie World Music - Rachid Taha winner of BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music

A bit late because of the so many pics taken at Jazz cafe in London!!!!.... we are proud to announce that on the 10th April, at Dingwall's in London Rachid was the winner of the North Africa/Middle East category of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music (Middle East and North Africa). The prize was presented to him by Lucinda Strummer, the widow of the late Joe Strummer who praised Rachid for his unique talent. An edited version of the evening was broadcast on Radio 3 on the 11th April with Rachid closing the programme with three numbers, which of course included Rock The Casbah. Rachid had already been a nominee for the same award in 2006 (Tekitoi album).

C'est avec un peu de retard (la faute aux nombreuses photos prises au Jazz Café à Londres!!!) que nous annonçons que, le 10 avril, Rachid Taha a obtenu le célèbre prix de la BBC Radio 3, catégorie World Music (Moyen Orient et Afrique du Nord). Le prix lui a été remis par Lucinda Strummer, la veuve de Joe Strummer, qui a félicité Rachid pour son talent unique. Une version écourtée de cette soirée a été transmise sur Radio 3 (BBC) le 11 avril, avec Rachid qui fermait la programmation avec trois morceaux dont bien sûr Rock the casbah. Rachid avait déjà été nominé pour le même prix en 2006 avec Tekitoi.

RACHID AT JAZZ CAFÉ 15TH APRIL

Lucky London, it’s been treated to a Taha fest of 3 gigs within 6 days. On Thursday 10th April, as the winner of the North Africa and Middle East category for Diwan 2, he closed the ceremony for the prestigious BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music at Dingwalls with a one hour set (three numbers of which were broadcast on Friday 11th April). This was followed by 2 nights (Monday 14th/ Tuesday 15th April) at the Jazz Café celebrating the 50th anniversary issue of Songlines magazine. Rachid seems to have a special place in his heart for the UK and he certainly has a loyal, enthusiastic and substantial community of fans here as was obvious in the animated atmosphere at Jazz Café where a lot of meeting and greeting between fans went on before the show. In an interview with Eddy Lawrence for Timeout, Rachid bemoans the fate of his music in France and says ‘Britain is one of the few places which treats him as a mainstream musician’ .

We made the round trip of 160 miles (260 kms) for Tuesday’s gig and found ourselves in a packed and heaving Jazz Café. It was a typical night out with Rachid, raucous, spontaneous and a bit of a party ~ the intimacy of venue made it a loud, sweaty, physical evening, Rachid prowling round the cramped stage in well-worn white winkle pickers and engaging in his habitual banter with the audience.

The band line-up included the familiar faces of Hakim on mandolute, Rachid Belgacem on percussion and Yves on keyboards with the addition of a three piece brass section, essential to the opening song, Ecoute Moi Camarade from Diwan 2. Well known and well loved by the audience, who could sing-a-long word perfect, the rest of the numbers were mainly from his albums, Made in Medina and Tekitoi? ~ Barra Barra, Medina, Shuf Shuf, H’asbu-hum and more ~ for Safi he was joined by two rappers, one of which was his son, Lyes.

Super fan David, who came over from Spain for both nights, told me he has seen Rachid 17 times (makes my 10 look limp ~ I’ve a lot of catching up to do!). He and his travelling companions ,les femmes des chapeaux, complete with red straw cowboy hats, encouraged by Rachid, jumped up to dance enthusiastically on the already over crowded stage. Sadly we had to leave before the end to catch our last train but the evening looked set to carry on well beyond anyone’s last train...

Hola de nuevo internautas!. En el anterior reportaje escribí en inglés lo que buenamente pude, así que ahora lo haré en español que se me da mejor, jeje.
Aquí tenéis las fotos del segundo concierto de Rachid en el Jazz Café, que como habréis podido ver es un local muy pequeñito, pero en el que la cercanía con el grupo hizo que el ambiente fuera muy entrañable y especial.

Esta vez estuve acompañado en esta excursión a Londres por "Les Femmes du Chapeau", a las que envío un saludo una vez más desde aquí.
En estos dos conciertos en Londres no estuvieron los músicos habituales del grupo Guillaume (batería), Banet (bajo) ni Stéphane (guitarra). En su lugar Rachid estuvo acompañado de su amigo Rodolphe Burger a la guitarra, y un bajista y un batería cuyos nombres no los sé, pido disculpas. Ya he descubierto quién es el bajista, es "Leon de Bretagne", y ha colaborado más veces con Rachid. Además también estuvieron en el escenario 3 personas tocando una sección de viento compuesta por dos saxofones y un trombón, con lo cual todas las canciones sonaron de manera distinta esas 2 noches.
A todos estos músicos hay que sumar además la presencia de diferentes colaboradores que sucesivamente iban subiendo al escenario para acompañar al grupo durante la interpretación de algunas canciones. Entre ellos estaba el hijo de Rachid, Lyes, que estuvo rapeando en francés cubierto con una capucha.
También le acompañó una joven de raza negra con una voz muy dulce que no paraba de reir ante los divertidos comentarios y bromas de Rachid, un rapero sirio que le de dió mucha vidilla al concierto con sus rimas de hip hop en inglés, un joven árabe que cantó Ya Rayah con Rachid, un saxofonista de Camerún muy alegre y divertido y una guapísima mujer palestina vestida de blanco que estuvo rapeando con el sirio, cantó junto con Rachid "Gana El Hawa" de una manera un tanto "especial" y cerró el concierto a petición de Rachid añadiendo una canción más después de "Garab".
Ambos conciertos estuvieron muy bien y Rachid se empleó a fondo para hacer bailar a los de las mesas de arriba, cosa que consiguió sin problemas. También invitó a subir a gente del público al escenario para bailar con ellos... una maravillosa locura.
En definitiva 2 estupendas noches "Tahanianas" en Londres que hicieron que el miércoles a primera hora de la mañana, a pesar de no haber dormido nada por estar tomando pintas en Camden, volviéramos para España hechos unos pellejos pero con la sonrisa de oreja a oreja.
Por último también quisiera saludar a Yvonne y Barry, que debido a que el concierto empezó más tarde de lo esperado y duró mucho, no pudieron quedarse hasta el final ya que su último tren se marchaba...
