More on Diwan2 - plus sur Diwan2

Rachid Taha in concert, source unknown. If you are the author let kelma know to add your credits, thanks!

Contenu: version club, version album, version radio.

Pssst! Nous avions déjà parlé de "Diwan2" ici!

Ecoute-moi camarade, Rachid Taha

"Diwan 2", Rachid Taha's new hommage to Oriental music, will be released in France on the 9th of October 2006 (Barclay), eight years after "Diwan" (this word means "poetic collection"). According to the latest Internet news, the album will be based on the same principles as the first "Diwan": a personal research into the sources of the musical culture in which the artist grew up and that he wants to revive in his very own way.
The CD will propose 11 songs, among which 9 covers from a very vast repertoire of songs coming from the arabic universe. It has been announced that this production (by Steve Hillage as most Taha's albums) will be more acoustic than the former "Diwan" : "Diwan2" is going to be some sort of "hypnotic blues", another little "Taha touch" we guess, two years after his rockin' "Tékitoi". This is not surprising for an artist who, record after record, has always known how to renew himself and stimulate his public by adding one more trait to the coherent circle of his ideas and projects.
With the CD, a DVD will be found: a documentary on Rachid's tour in Algeria in May 2006. It seems that it will be available as a podcast before the release of the CD, but it is another blog news, and not ours!

We do not know whether it is an excerpt (probable!!!) or not, but it's nice: listen to (or buy) "Ecoute-moi camarade" (composer Mohamed Mazouni) super 45T on Fnac.com ( a 31/07/2006 release)! Mp3 at this link!!! Tracks: album version, club version, radio version!

Heeeep!!! We had already spoken of "Diwan2" here!

Turkish Guillaume, Idris and Noel.

Rachid (top), Idris, Guillaume, Noel (below) in Izmir. Photo by Gokhan Kali Mais kess ki disent?

But what are they talking about? This time, those who are interviewed are Idris Badarou (bass), Guillaume Rossel (drums) and Noel Delfin (guitar) as members of the "band" during the latest Rachid's concert in Izmir, Turkey. Here is the transcription in Turkish and our exclusive translation into english (with some bits of it that are not sure---sorry for that. If you can complete it, write at our contact address! Thanks!) ! I'm however giving one second call for the translation of one other interview in turkish the meaning of which is still unknown to us non-turkish speakers (see here)?
Turkey
Taha'nın arkasında çalmak...
Playing background with Taha...
Rachid Taha was maybe a little bit tired in Babylon Alacati, but he didnt (??translation unknown) the audience. Taha was feeling too bad to release an interview, so we talked and gossiped in the “kitchen” with some of his band members.

İzmir- time 00,30…. Algerian-born French singer Rachid Taha, with his white (??) shoes, his yellow shining shirt, and with his middle-area football-player hair, is having a concert in the windy Alacati night. (???? translation not clear) But in Alacati, only Rachid Taha is not in a good mood! A little bit tired, a little bit bored. He doesnt speak with the audience. At the begininning of the concert, he does not take the mic because the microphone bar (translation??); he is tired…. But no one complains about it because it's a vacation. When they begin “ya rayah”, Babylon Alacati is shaking. And at some moment Rachid Taha and his band sing “aldırma gönül”, and everyone is singing with them. After staying 2 hours on stage, Rachid Taha is leaving. And (?) interview time has come at the end of the concert. We're waiting for Rachid Taha but there's nothing. So we decide to talk with his band. For Taha's team, it's a very normal situation… they are telling us. (??translation not clear). And so you will be reading now our interview with his band memebers Noel Deflin (Guitar), Guillaume Rossel (Drums) and Idris Badarou (bass guitar).
Journalist: Rachid Taha'yla çalışmaya ne zaman başladınız?
Journalist: When did you begin to work with Rachid Taha?
İdriss: Biiiip. Rachid'e küfür etmeyecksiniz değil mi? (gülüyor)
Idriss: Biiiip…….. you have not (?? translation unsure) to Taha, have you??? smiling
Guillaume: Bir yıl önce başladım çalışmaya Rachid'le. Ya da 11 ay mı oldu? Yok yok 12 ay oldu galiba.
Guillaume: I began a year ago, or 11 months ago? No, no 12 months ago, I think.
Noel: Hadi! Hadi artık söyle bir şey.
Noel: Come on say something.
Guillaume: Evet evet, bir yıl oldu. Ama ben onu 12 senedir tanıyorum. Daha çocuktum tanıştığımızda.
G:Yes, yes, one year ago. But I've known him for 12 years. We were kids (? all this part of the translation is not sure) when we met.
J:yılda neler oldu Rachid Taha'nın hayatında?
J:What happened in Rachid Taha’s life in the last 12 years?
N:In France and around the world he became more famous.
J: O yüzden mi böyle davranıyor?
J: Is he acting that's why (= translation unsure. Maybe it means "is thjis the reason why he is behaving like that")?
N: He became a great star, but believe me, he is still acting so naturally with people. İn fact he wanted to have an interview with you. Think about it, he is coming from Paris to Alacati and he is in the middle of the center for everything. Of course it is so complicated and he's exhausted. And he is very tired and sleepless.
J: Rachid Taha'yla çalışmak nasıl?
J: How is it working with Rachid Taha?
G: For us he is a good “boss”. As a result we work for him and we are a band. And my favourite thing about him is his nature. So our concerts are never the same. We have different performances with the same songs.
Noel: Ben Faudel'in grubunda da çaldım.
N: I played in Faudel’s band. İt was a good experience but no one was as the ones with Rachid.. Because when we are on stage Rachid let all the team behave how they like to behave. Dance or talk no matter.
J: I don't speak about the interview but about tonight Rachid Taha’s performance that was not that good. He is a good singer but tonight you played good and he didn't sing well.
Guillaume: Bazen yapıyor öyle.
G:Sometimes, it happens.
Noel: Konserden konsere fark edebiliyor. İyi bir punk şarkıcısı Rachid. Öyle ki, İngiltere'de The Clash'in solisti Joe Strummer'dan sonraki en iyi punk-rock şarkıcısı olarak tanınıyor.
N: It depends on the concert. Rachid is a good punk singer. He's known as the second best punk-rock singer after The Clash’s ex-singer Joe Strummer.
J: Müziğinizde Cezayir ezgileri kullanmanız dünya müzik piyasasında Rachid Taha'ya olan ilgiyi körüklüyor mu size?
J: Is it an advantage to use Algerian music in the world music universe (=translation not sure) for Rachid Taha?
Noel: Rock'n roll davulu ve rock'n roll gitarla karıştırıyor Cezayir ezgilerini. Ve insanlar bunu çok beğeniyor.
N: Rock'n Roll drum and rocknroll guitar mixing together are Algerian music. And people love this.
Guillaume: Rachid Taha özellikle rai yapmıyor, rock müzik yapıyor.
G: Rachid Taha doen not make rai, but rock music.
?: O yüzden başarılı. Hatta bazen 'tekno-elektro'ya kayabiliyor. Hiçbir zaman aynı gırtlakla aynı şarkıları da söylemiyor. Buna dikkat ediyor.
?: That's why he is successful, even if he can slip into tecno-electronic music. He never sings the same songs with same throat. He is careful.
J: Çok başarılı 'rai'ciler de var. Khaled, Faudel, Cheb Mami'yi beğenmiyor musunuz?
J: There are very successful rai music makers. Khaled, Faudel, Cheb Mami… don't you like them?
Noel: Cheb Mami'yi çok severim.
N: I love Cheb Mami very much.
Guillaume: Bana göre Mami'nin Robbie Willams'tan pek farkı yok.
G: For me there's no difference between Mami and Robbie Williams
J: Cheb Mami'yle Robbie Willams'ı mı karşılaştırıyorsunuz?
J: Are you comparing Cheb Mami and Robbie Williams?
N: (???unknown translation). 'Cause there's no similarity with Rachid; Mami never made rock for example.
İşte Rachid'in farkı, farklı olması.
G: Because there's no surprise in Cheb Mami’s music. It is always the same…. There's no variety. Rai singers always sing like crying. Cheb Khaled, Faudel are good, but always the same. This is why Rachid is different.
İdriss: Mesela Patti Smith, Robert Plant'le çalıştı Rachid.
I: For instance Rachid worked with Patti smith, Robert Plant.
J: Bu gece Babylon Alaçatı'daki seyirci nasıldı sizce? Fransa'daki dinleyiciden farklı mı?
J: How was the audience in Babylon Alacati tonight for you? Are they here different from French audience?
Noel: Dünyanın neresine giderseniz gidin, Fransız seyircisi dışındaki her dinleyici iyidir. (gülüyor)
N: All around the world, all audiences are good, excepted French ones (laughing)
J: Öyle mi, neden?
J: Aren't they, why?
G: 'Cause in france, people come to the concert, you play and they look. Then the concert ends and they say "ok", and leave. And as a result they love Celine Dion (laughing).
Thanks aran for providing and forwarding us this translation!!!!

Merci!

Diwan2 on the way!

diwan2

The official Site is announcing the forthcoming release of Rachid Taha's Diwan2 ( sequel of Diwan) for the 16th of October! The cover seems to be a nice mix of recalled North-African tradition (the turban, the old LP-lay-out), Rachid's everlasting sense of humour and the blue colour we were used to find on his pre-"Made in Medina" albums. Can't wait for it, hyiiiiii??? It means it is a good job!
